Krampus custom in the Ötztal
Hellish hustle and bustle with great tradition
For many years, the Krampustreiben has been a custom here with us in the Ötztal. As companions of St. Nicholas, the dark companions play a very important role. Also the Knecht Ruprecht may not be missing of course also with our Nikolaus.
Every year, the numerous Tuifl groups in the Ötztal strive to put on hellish shows and prepare for the diabolical goings-on again as early as spring. From the Ötztal fire devils to the Haiminger Krampussen, there are many different groups that inspire the spectators every year anew.

Masks and robes
The custom of the Krampustreibens now plays a major role for the Ötztal. The elaborately made robes and masks become more imposing every year and no expense is spared on effects and equipment.
Equipped with sheep and goat skins, elaborately carved masks and cow bells, the Krampuses parade through the villages on their floats. Afterwards, there is usually an amazingly staged show.
With a horse's tail or a rod, the Krampuses want to scare the children and adults a little, so that they become a little more well-behaved again. After all, that's what they are there for, our Ötztal Krampusse.
